We said 70 universities showed no response. We had searched the wrong building in 17 of them.
A second search, outside the education schools, found universities running, founding or authorizing K–12 schools. The share with no response fell from about two in three to about half.
Our first pass of the 102 universities read mostly education-school pages. Correction 03 showed that misses what universities do elsewhere, so we searched every “none” row again: K–12 units, online schools, charter offices, lab schools and outreach centers.
Seventeen of 70 had a documented response. Twelve run, founded or authorize schools. UT Austin runs a 24-campus charter district and UT High School, an online public high school of 6,000+ students that now sells courses to Texas ESA families. UC San Diego operates the Preuss School. USC's Hybrid High grew into a six-school charter network. WashU authorizes KIPP St. Louis. Rutgers–Camden's LEAP Academy serves about 1,500 children. UNC–Chapel Hill runs its own lab school as its own school district.
Four more work with districts: Rochester ran East High for the city district until June 2025; UVA and JMU run new lab schools with their districts; Arizona builds teacher pathways with Sunnyside. One, RIT, partners with a charter high school.
What changed. No response found is now 46% of AAU members and 55% of the Most Innovative. We also withdrew our claim that responses sit mostly outside education schools; the recoded schools are split. Each recoded row is marked in the data, and the change is logged as Correction 04.
What did not change. None of the 17 prepares educators for microschools, hybrid schools or homeschool co-ops. The most common university response is still running or authorizing a school, not preparing anyone to teach in one.
The limit, first. UC Davis, Howard and Miami remain unresolved, and the first pass coded district partnerships unevenly; that needs its own pass.
